CAROLYN BERRYMAN
Carolyn leads the team at Unley Physiotherapy
Services. Her vision for Unley Physiotherapy is: to
create a centre of excellence in physiotherapy management
for primarily musculoskeletal pain conditions.
As such, she has sought out therapists of the highest
quality in both personal characteristics and practical
skills. The continual upgrading of their professional
skills and knowledge is a priority of this practice.
Carolyn graduated from the Institute of Technology
(SA) in 1986 and then gained a wide variety of experience
working in public hospital settings.
During her postgraduate study (Masters of Physiotherapy)
Carolyn developed a deep interest in the mechanisms
of pain production. With the enthusiasm and support
of well known physiotherapist, David Butler, she organised
the first conference addressing that area specifically
for physiotherapists. Called “Moving In On Pain”,
the conference was held in April 1995.
The findings from this conference formed the basis
of Carolyn’s research for her Graduate Diploma
in Medical Science (Pain Management) from the University
of Sydney.
Throughout this period, Carolyn worked in private practice.
She purchased Unley Physiotherapy Services in 1991.
As well as her clinical work, Carolyn continued with
undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching until
the late 1990’s and commenced teaching pain sciences
to undergraduate and postgraduate physiotherapists in
2001, following her graduation from the University of
Sydney.
Integrating the body of pain science literature into
practice is an ongoing, passionate pursuit.
Carolyn has been Secretary, then President of Musculoskeletal
Physiotherapy Australia (SA Branch) for a combined period
of 5 years. She was convenor of their most recent conference
in Adelaide in 2001 and has contributed to various strategic
planning meetings, both local and national, over the
last decade.
JEANNIE BURNETT
Jeannie graduated from the University of Sydney.
In her 12 years of experience she has worked mainly
in private practice treating musculoskeletal dysfunction.
Her experience ranges from elite sports people and musicians
to office workers (the ‘office athletes’).
In 2002 Jeannie completed her Master of Physiotherapy
(Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy). She now shares her
time between clinical work at Unley Physiotherapy Services
and research at the University of South Australia.
Jeannie has a special interest in all things spinal,
such as headache, neck ache and lower back pain. In
particular, she is interested in looking at the best
way to improve control of the spinal muscles in order
to prevent problems, or at least provide clients with
control over their particular problem.
Since the birth of her son in 2002, she has become
increasingly aware of the strains of child-bearing and
child-rearing on the musculoskeletal system. She enjoys
assessing and advising women on how to care for their
spine during this period of their lives. Jeannie also
teaches Pilates in a class setting.

health issues, aquatic physiotherapy and the treatment
of dizziness and general vestibular rehabilitation.
As a mother of 5 children, Bernie understands the impact
that a busy family and working life has on women’s
health and well-being.
Bernie has been tutoring in the musculoskeletal area
at the School of Physiotherapy (Uni SA) for 23 years.
She has been involved with various research projects
at the University and was the SA Manager of the National
